General Membership Meeting Minutes

October 3, 2006

Wilma Schmitz, Breakthrough President, called the meeting to order at 8:35 a.m. The meeting began with the traditional introductions of all members present. Wilma asked that because of time constraints, no announcements or marketing be done at this time.

Committee Updates

Ad Hoc Missouri Senior Report: No report.

Advocacy: Stephanie Rohlfs-Young made the advocacy report on behalf of Carroll Rodriquez and Debbie Schuster. The state of Missouri photo identification for voting is still pending. The state is appealing the District Court’s rejection of this law. Debbie wanted to poll the membership to determine preference for a legislative forum. The choices are to have someone from the Advocacy Committee provide a report of upcoming legislative initiatives or to have two professional lobbyists speak about how to contact one’s legislators and have one’s viewpoint heard by the legislators and speak about what the lobbyists do. The membership voted to have the lobbyists speak at the forum at the end of February.

Finance Committee: No report.

Gateway Grandparents/Kinship Network: The new grandparenting guides are out along with bookmarks explaining what Gateway Grandparents is all about. The next meeting of this committee will be Oct.18. at the Society for the Blind.

Outreach Committee: Barbara Buesse reported that the 2007 speakers and topics are set. The committee meets the second Wednesday of odd months at noon at the offices of St. Andrews, 6633 Delmar. The committee is working on a fall networking event. The date and place will be announced later.

Resource Guide Committee: Copies of the 2006 St. Louis Times Older Adult Resource Guide, which is endorsed by the Breakthrough Coalition, are available for members who have not yet picked up their copies.

Safety Committee: Hedva Barenholtz-Levy reported that the committee is trying to determine how to disseminate the checklist for meeting with one’s health care provider. There is a training on Nov. 2 on how to use the workbook, Solitaire. The committee meets on the second Tuesday in the odd months at the American Red Cross offices. Hedva is recruiting groups for the Solitaire training.

Steering Committee: Hedva, as a member of the ad hoc committee on credentialing the officers of Breakthrough, reported that effective January 1, 2007, the officers will go through a background check utilizing the Family Care Registry for a nominal fee. The fee will be absorbed by Breakthrough. Stephanie reported that the Minority Outreach Advocacy is now a subcommittee of Breakthrough Coalition. Minority Outreach sponsors the Village of Many Colors annually. Ric Cavanagh reported that the Nominating Committee is soliciting more nominations for the Vice President-President Elect position and the Member At Large position.
